Although it may be Independence Day in the US, Oxford is also celebrating it’s own “very important date”. Today in 1862, Charles Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) first told the story of the topsy-turvy world of Wonderland to a little girl called Alice Liddell on the banks of the River Thames in Oxford.

We adore these Alice stories, and all the various editions of them that have appeared in our Oxford World’s Classics series.

“If I had a world of my own,” said Alice, “everything would be nonsense!”
